Psychological testing is used when a more detailed, in-depth look into a client’s functioning is desired. Psychological testing can be viewed as part of a comprehensive work-up for a client that falls under the umbrella of the psychological assessment process. During the assessment process, the test administrator will typically conduct a clinical interview (gathering historical as well as recent information) with the client, review past records (e.g., medical, educational, other mental health records), interview others significant in the client’s life when necessary (e.g., parents, teachers), and administer psychological tests.

When more than one area of psychological testing is required, a clinician may administer what is referred to as a psychological test battery. This group of tests that are administered to the client cover various areas of the client’s functioning—typically, yielding information on a client’s cognitive/intellectual, personality, and educational functioning.
